Workshops

Two parallel workshops will be held on June 27. A short description and the program may be found below.

Workshops will be followed by a short tour to the region, which includes a dinner with local gastronomy. A bus will depart from the University of Minho at 16.00. Participants in PaPI2007 and Workshops are requested to register for the tour when registering for  the main conference (preferably at PaPI2007 welcome party, on June 24).

Workshop 1  Transcription of Intonation in the Ibero-Romance Languages

Organized by Sónia Frota & Gorka Elordieta

The workshop aims at raising and discussing relevant issues on the transcription of intonation in the Ibero-Romance languages. Talks will focus on Catalan, Galician, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Workshop 2  Acquisition of Phonology: Experiments and Applications

Organized by Maria João Freitas & Marina Vigário

Different research areas and methodological procedures have contributed, in the last years, to the understanding of how children perceive, produce and process phonological information. A significant amount of studies on phonological acquisition presently incorporate experimental procedures to test hypotheses on how various aspects of the children's phonological development are to be understood. Moreover, part of the bulk of knowledge gained so far has been used in clinical and educational areas as a relevant means of improving the children's level of success in both contexts. The workshop we are now proposing aims at bringing together different perspectives of investigation on the acquisition of phonology. Invited talks will focus on experimental approaches to children's perception and production, and the relation between the two, as well as applications of the knowledge in this field in clinical and educational studies.
